Service, Care, and Continuity

A frame is made to remain in use.

Adjustment, maintenance, repair, and selected restoration belong to the life of the object from the beginning.

A frame should become more specific to its wearer over time. Surface polish, tonal deepening, small adjustments, and future intervention are part of that continuity.

A Five-Year Relationship

Each TANAKA frame is covered by a five-year warranty from the date of completion.

This period is understood as a relationship between maker, wearer, and frame.

It covers faults in my making or in the materials, together with small adjustments to ear height and nose pad, hinge assessment, and inspection of structural and functional condition.

Where repair is required, the atelier determines the appropriate route.

Care

Use both hands when putting on or removing the frame.

If dust or grit is present, rinse before wiping.

Clean with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a clean microfiber cloth.

Avoid alcohol, solvents, household sprays, abrasive cloths, hot water, home ultrasonic cleaners, dashboards, radiators, and sustained heat.

If the frame begins to sit unevenly, or if a screw repeatedly loosens, request service.

Atelier Maintenance

For service requests, please send the serial number, photographs, and a short description of the issue to the atelier from service request form below.

Fit Adjustment
Small corrections to ear height and nose pad. The frame cannot be bent after making.

Condition Inspection
For review of hinge action, structural stability, lens seating, and overall condition.

Repair
For serviceable structural or mechanical issues affecting function or stability.

Lens Replacement
Available as a separate paid service through TANAKA or selected opticians. Unless a lens fault arises from an original defect, lens replacement is not covered under warranty.

Restoration
For more significant damage, the atelier assesses whether repair or restoration is structurally appropriate to the piece.

Five-Year Warranty

The warranty covers faults in my making or in the materials, together with small adjustments to ear height and nose pad, hinge assessment, and inspection of the frame’s structural and functional condition. Where repair is required, the appropriate route is determined by the atelier after review.

Included under warranty
faults in my making or in the materials
Small adjustments to ear height and nose pad, at the atelier, by appointment
Hinge and structural assessment
Repair of serviceable issues related to material or construction.

Outside warranty
Accidental damage
Misuse or neglect
Damage caused by solvents, household sprays, or excessive heat
Damage caused by unauthorised repair attempts
Routine lens replacement
Scratched or broken lenses not resulting from an original defect
Lost components

Even where an issue falls outside warranty, the frame may still be accepted for paid service or restoration after assessment.

This warranty is in addition to your statutory rights and does not affect them.

Kintsugi-Informed Restoration

In selected cases involving cracking or chipping, TANAKA may offer a kintsugi-informed restoration approach. The purpose is to return strength while allowing a visible memory of the repair to remain. This is assessed individually according to the nature of the damage, the structure of the frame, and the integrity of the result. It is used only where the structure of the frame and the quality of the outcome justify it.

Serial Number and Service Record

Every frame is engraved at the temple with its model, its number.

The number is yours, not the frame's. It stays with you through adjustment, repair, remaking and restoration. If a Patina is ever made again, the number goes with it and your place in the 150 is unchanged.

Everything I do to the frame is recorded against that number. Fittings, service, repairs and what caused them. It is why I can take up work I did years ago without asking you to remember it.

Service Request

To request service, send:

Serial number
Photographs
A short description of the issue

Please wait for atelier confirmation before sending the frame.

If work falls outside warranty, a private quotation is provided before any work begins.

If the fault is mine, I cover the postage both ways. For anything else, including adjustment, accidental damage and routine service, postage is yours. Insure the frame before you send it.
