1. About TANAKA Eyewear

TANAKA Eyewear produces frames in small numbers. Each frame is made to order by a single maker using a compressed paper composite, stainless-steel hinges, and polyamide lenses.

2. Definitions

We / us / our: TANAKA Eyewear Ltd.
You: the purchaser.
Order: an agreed request for a frame and any related services (including lenses if supplied).
Production Start: the point at which your order is committed to making, including serial allocation to your order, material cutting, component preparation, hinge setting, final sizing, finishing, or lens ordering.
Normal Use: everyday wearing and handling consistent with eyewear use, including careful removal with both hands, routine cleaning, and storage in a case.

3. Orders and acceptance

We accept orders at our discretion. An order is accepted only when we confirm it by email.

4. Made to order and lead time

All TANAKA eyewear is made to order. Any production window we provide is an estimate, not a guarantee.

5. Specification, fitting and changes

If fitting is arranged, we will confirm the agreed specification following fitting.
Before Production Start, you may request changes. We will confirm whether changes are possible and whether timing or cost changes.
After Production Start, changes may not be possible. If changes are possible, they may incur additional cost and extend lead time.

6. Cancellations

If you wish to cancel, contact us immediately.

Before Production Start: we may accept cancellation in writing. If accepted, we will refund payments received, less any non-recoverable costs already incurred at your request (for example, special-order components or lenses).

After Production Start: cancellations are not accepted and payments are not refundable, except where required by law or where the product is faulty.7. Pricing, payment and allocation

To secure an allocation, we require 50% payment. This confirms your place in the making queue.

Allocation payment and refunds: the 50% allocation payment is refundable only before Production Start, less any non-recoverable costs already incurred at your request (for example, special-order components or lenses). After Production Start, the allocation payment becomes non-refundable, except where required by law or where a product is faulty.

The remaining 50% is due on completion of production, before dispatch or collection.

If a balance payment is not received within a reasonable time after we notify you that production is complete, we may pause dispatch and storage arrangements until payment is received. We will confirm next steps by email.

8. Delivery, risk and inspection

We ship from the United Kingdom. Delivery times depend on destination and carrier. Risk passes when the parcel is delivered to the address you provide, or on collection where arranged.
On delivery, inspect the item promptly and notify us without delay if there is any transit damage or fault on arrival.

9. Taxes and duties

Prices exclude local taxes, import duties, and handling charges unless we state otherwise. You are responsible for charges applied by customs or carriers in your country.

10. Faulty goods and statutory remedies

If a product is faulty, you may have statutory rights in your country. In the UK, consumers have remedies including repair or replacement, and in some circumstances a refund. These Terms do not affect those rights.

11. Warranty: five years

We provide a five-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under Normal Use, including mechanical components such as hinges, from the date of purchase.

Not covered

  • Lens scratches, coating wear, and other wear consistent with use

  • Accidental damage (drops, impact, crushing), heat damage, chemical exposure, or damage from improper cleaning

  • Misuse, neglect, unauthorised adjustment, or third-party repair or modification

  • Loss or theft

  • Normal cosmetic change from use, including patina, sheen, and edge character

Assessment and reasonableness
We assess claims based on the information provided and inspection where needed. If the cause is consistent with Normal Use, we will repair under warranty. If the cause is accidental damage or mishandling, it is not covered. Where circumstances are reasonable and clearly explained, we may still offer an at-cost repair option.

How to claim
Email us with your order details, the frame serial number, and clear photographs. We will confirm return instructions. Unless we state otherwise, you are responsible for shipping to us. For valid warranty repairs, we cover return shipping.

12. Repairs outside warranty and accidental damage

We offer repair and refurbishment at cost outside warranty, and for damage not covered by warranty. We quote before work begins.

Turnaround
Repair time depends on the nature of the work and current queue. Typical turnaround is 1 to 3 weeks from receipt of the item at the studio. This is an estimate, not a guarantee.

13. Returns

Because each frame is made to order, returns are not generally accepted once Production Start has occurred, except for faults.
If a return is required by law in your jurisdiction, we will follow the applicable rules and confirm the process in writing.

14. Care and use

The material is designed to age; patina and sheen develop with handling and light.
Care: wear and remove with both hands. If dust is present, rinse with lukewarm water before wiping. Use mild soap if needed, rinse, and dry fully. Store in the case when not in use. If hardware loosens, contact the studio or a qualified optician. Do not overtighten.

15. Ownership, authenticity and resale

Each frame is recorded by maker and serial number.
Private resale of your own item is permitted. Commercial resale, retail listing, or representing yourself as an authorised seller of TANAKA Eyewear without written consent is not permitted.

16. Limitation of liability

We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Our total liability is limited to the price paid for the product to which a claim relates, unless otherwise required by law.

17. Force majeure

We are not responsible for delays caused by events beyond our reasonable control.

18. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, you may also benefit from mandatory consumer protections in your country of residence; nothing in these Terms excludes those protections.
